Self Drive

Driving to the Alps by car is very easy for anyone who is relatively used to driving - with the exceptional network of motorways in France and our detailed directions and Sat Nav information, it takes away the hassle of carrying ski equipment and also waiting in airports.  If you live close to the Channel Ports, the total length of travelling time can be almost the same if you drive as if you fly from London.  With self drive, it is possible to get an extra 2 days skiing by driving out on Friday and back on the Sunday, perhaps staying in one of the many en-route hotels overnight to break the journey - the ultimate in flexibility both en-route and in the resort.  Our chalets have parking close-by and we can also advise on parking facilities for our self catered apartments.

P&O Ferry Crossings

For a "ferry inclusive" package with the largest ferry operator across the Channel, we normally apply a surcharge of £99 per car for a crossing from Dover to Calais.  Prices may vary for late notice bookings or on certain dates, so check with us and we will be pleased to confirm the price at the time of booking.

This price covers a normal car (including most higher 4x4 and people carriers) of less than 4.5 m in length and up to 5 passengers.

We are also able to provide quotations for other types of vehicles, such as mobile homes or vehicles with trailers.

The ferry crossing Dover to Calais is approximately 1hr 15minutes and most of the boats are new and well equipped for a cruise across the Channel. You are able to take a meal and shop at French prices on board.  You join the motorway at the dock in Calais and the resorts are approximately 610 miles or 980 kms drive.

Our ferry tickets are fully flexible - which you cannot get with a public ticket.  This means that if you turn up at the port at a different time to the time booked, you will be able to board the next ferry without any surcharges or fines to be paid.  As it is almost impossible to estimate travel times over such a distance, this almost always saves you up to £50 per leg of the journey!

Eurotunnel Crossing

As an alternative, the shuttle train crosses the channel tunnel from Folkestone to Calais and takes approximately 35 minutes - with departures up to 3 per hour.  All British and French customs formalities are dealt with before departure so you drive off at Calais and immediately join the motorway.  There are no facilities on board the train but the terminal at each end has shops and restaurants if you want to break your journey before crossing.  Prices for Eurotunnel crossings vary depending on when you book your ticket and when you plan to travel - contact us for an individual quotation which will almost always be cheaper than the public prices.  Our tickets again are also flexible within two hours so you can board the next available shuttle if you arrive at a time other than the one booked.

Snowchains and Other Essential Equipment

When driving in the Alps, it is a legal requirement to carry snow chains and other safety equipment in the vehicle in case of poor weather conditions.  If you do not have the proper equipment, the Gendarmerie will stop you from entering the mountain roads in times of heavy snow and you will not be able to reach the resort.  Snowchains and other required equipment can be purchased or rented in the UK before departure - they are specific to the wheel size of your vehicle so you must ensure that they fit properly as otherwise they are useless!!

It is also necessary to carry a warning triangle, first aid kit, spare bulb kit and a luminous emergency jacket - and don't forget you need to divert your headlights!

We have negotiated discounts with one of the major suppliers in the UK for our customers for either purchase or rental of snowchains and for provision of the various kits needed to drive on the continent.  Polar Chains can advise you and offer the UK's widest choice in chains - they also offer in-car DVD players and Satellite Navigations Systems along with many other pieces of equipment.  You must mention our name when you call in order to receive your 20% discount on their public prices.
