Val Thorens

The highest resort village in Europe, and part of the extensive Three Valleys area, this resort offers excellent snow conditions and local slopes to suit all abilities

Val Thorens is built at 2300m - high above the tree line at the bleak end of the Belleville valley.  The village is compact and purpose built but with reasonable care - it's height is an advantage but can be a disadvantage in bad weather when high winds can close lifts.  Along with Tignes, the snow record is difficult to beat and pistes are available for all levels with some good local nursery slopes, a host of choices for the intermediates and lots to do off-piste for the experts.

Linking easily into the other Three Valleys resorts and more recently into the "Fourth Valley" at Orelle, the expanse of skiable area is vast.  Related villages include Les Menuires and the lower down pretty village recently developed at St Martin de Belleville.

The apres-ski is livelier than other high altitude resorts with a choice of bars and nightclubs and a pub which claims to be the highest in Europe.  Non-ski activites are limited but there is a good sports club and a swimming pool
