Resort Information Tignes

i

Tignes is one of the highest resorts in Europe with a village height of 2100m and skiing up to the Grand Motte at 3455m which is open almost all year round.  The skiing here is fantastic with varied terrain and one of the best areas in the world for lift served off-piste areas.  Linked to the resort of Val d'Isere to form the "Espace Killy" ski area, there are 300km of pistes with great snow reliability throughout the season - if snow is what you want, this is the place to go.

The price to be paid for the snow conditions is that the altitude means everything is above the tree line and the resort is stark and bleak with almost no character.  The apartment buildings are generally ugly, square blocks and there is almost no village ambience here - it could be described as an architectural nightmare!  Although improving, it's not a great place for nightlife either - the focus in Tignes is most definately on the skiing and it's a resort where you ski long and hard and go to bed early.  Most of the accommodation is on or close to the pistes - at least in the higher villages of Val Claret and Tignes le Lac - so access to the terrain is easy.  There are also a number of high speed lifts including the funiculaire at Val Claret which whizzes you up to the glacier at 3000m in a matter of minutes.

For beginners and families, the resort are trying to re-invent themselves with a good ski school and some nursery slope areas in Tignes le Lac - however, it remains a haven for the serious advanced or intermediate skier and people looking for more from their holiday than soft white powder should head somewhere else.
